Bryan County Savannah Suburb

Listings in Richmond Hill, GA

Welcome to Richmond Hill, the Bryan County community south of Savannah shaped by Henry Ford and home to Fort McAllister State Park.

Richmond Hill is a city in Bryan County, Georgia, situated about 12 miles south of Savannah along the U.S. 17 and Interstate 95 corridors. Its population was 16,633 at the 2020 census. The community began as a small railroad stop called Ways Station, but its identity was reshaped in the 20th century by one of America's most famous industrialists. Henry Ford and his wife Clara arrived in 1925 seeking a winter home and ultimately owned tens of thousands of acres across the area. Ford's presence brought schools, clinics, and infrastructure to the community, which took the name Richmond Hill during his time there. He also acquired and restored Fort McAllister, a Confederate earthwork fort on the Ogeechee River, opening it as a public historic site in the 1930s. Today the Richmond Hill History Museum, housed in the former Henry Ford Kindergarten, preserves that legacy. The city has grown into a residential and commercial hub for southern Bryan County and the Savannah region. Master-planned communities such as Waterways, with its lagoons, marina, and trails, and newer subdivisions have expanded the housing stock, while the Ogeechee River, tidal creeks, and coastal marshlands frame the landscape. Public schools fall under Bryan County Schools, with Richmond Hill High School serving the city. Recreation centers on Fort McAllister State Park, a 1,725-acre site offering a Civil War fort, museum, campground, and river access, along with nearby coastal attractions. For residents, Richmond Hill offers suburban living, a distinctive historical identity, and a short commute to Savannah and its regional employment. The blend of Ford-era heritage, coastal recreation, and Savannah access defines the city's appeal for families and commuters.

About Richmond Hill

Real Estate & Housing

Richmond Hill's housing stock reflects its transformation from a small railroad town into a Savannah-area suburb. Master-planned communities such as Waterways offer resort-style amenities including lagoons, a marina, pools, and trails, while subdivisions like Brigham Lakes provide covenant-protected, family-oriented housing. Some communities feature deep-water access and marsh views along the tidal creeks. The market spans new construction, established single-family homes, and larger lots, appealing to Savannah commuters and families drawn to the city's schools and coastal setting.

Neighborhoods

Waterways is among Richmond Hill's signature communities, a master-planned neighborhood with lagoons, a marina, pools, trails, and a year-round events calendar. Brigham Lakes offers a covenant-protected setting just outside the city limits, and other subdivisions provide deep-water and marsh-view homesites along the tidal creeks. Established neighborhoods near the city center reflect the community's longer history, while newer construction extends across southern Bryan County. The result is a range of suburban options, from amenity-rich planned communities to quiet, established streets.

Lifestyle in Richmond Hill

Richmond Hill offers a relaxed coastal Georgia lifestyle with deep historical roots. Community life centers on local schools, parks, and events, while the city's restaurants range from neighborhood kitchens to regional and global fare. The Henry Ford legacy is woven through the community's identity, from the Richmond Hill History Museum to Fort McAllister. The nearby Ogeechee River, tidal creeks, and coastal marshlands support fishing, boating, and outdoor recreation, and Savannah's dining, culture, and events sit about 20 minutes away.

Schools & Education

Students in Richmond Hill attend Bryan County Schools, the countywide district serving the Richmond Hill and Pembroke areas. The district operates primary, elementary, middle, and high schools, with Richmond Hill High School — home of the Wildcats — serving the city alongside several elementary and middle campuses. The district's schools are a key draw for families relocating to southern Bryan County, and additional educational options are available in the wider Savannah region.

Getting Around

Richmond Hill lies about 12 miles south of Savannah, with downtown Savannah roughly a 20-minute drive via U.S. Highway 17. Interstate 95 runs just west of the city, providing quick access to Savannah, Brunswick, and the broader Southeast coast, while Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is a short drive north. Residents rely on personal vehicles, and the city's position between Savannah and the coastal islands makes it a practical base for commuters working in Chatham County and the surrounding region.

Parks & Recreation

Fort McAllister State Park, a 1,725-acre historic site on the Ogeechee River, anchors recreation in Richmond Hill with its Civil War earthwork fort, museum, campground, fishing dock, boat ramp, and nature trails. The river and surrounding tidal creeks support boating, kayaking, and fishing, while nearby Skidaway Island State Park and the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens extend the outdoor options. Community parks and the Waterways community's marina and trails add everyday recreation, making the city a comfortable base for coastal outdoor life.
